Toby starts off in class learning about human sexuality. He doesn’t like attention but its rather hard sense he is a freshman and has grey hair all ready. They are still unsure if it is an ageing dieses or if his hair is just graying. After school Toby visits a house type of store that sells candy and collectables. The owner is Mr. D. and Toby ends up spending a lot of time with him at his store. Toby is very helpful to Mr. D. not just because he is old but because he is a friend and they have a lot of things in common. They spend a lot of their time chatting about baseball cards and other things. Today is a different day because Mr. D. decides to give Toby a rare baseball card that he has been wanting for a long time. This is a 62’ Stargell rookie baseball card. Toby can just look at in aw and sits there in silence having a special moment. Later on that night Toby’s mom brings food home from the “Food King”. This is a man that comes and gets his hair cut at his moms work. He tips her in frozen food specials instead of money. This is also a rare special night because they are all together eating dinner at the same time. When Toby’s mom says where she got the food all the kids joke and laugh at the “Food Kings” weird name. They don’t usually laugh and joke together any more. It was something that they did when they were little. After all of this, Toby notices that he feels like they are a family again. This comes to an end shortly after when dinner is over. Toby and Jake decide to go out side because they are to destructive inside when they horse play. Toby asks Jake if he would like to play a game called wolf. To Toby’s surprise Jake actually says yes. Toby hides and Jake has to try to catch him before he makes it to base. Toby works his way to the base and sprints as fast as he can. At the last second Jake pops out of no where and tackles Toby to the ground. It was all a good time and Toby even beat Jake until Andy comes around. Almost instantly Jake becomes a different person and tries to act cool. Jake ditches Toby his own bother for a friend that Toby knows is a known drug dealer. But before Jake goes he decided to lift up Toby’s spirits by telling him he fought well and he’s getting better. Toby decides to go home, when he gets there he sees his mom crying at the kitchen table. He realizes she’s paying bills and she doesn’t know where the money is going to come from. He decides he will talk to her later instead of trying to fix it and making a bigger problem then what it all ready is. Instead he decides to count his gray hairs on his head. He gives up counting and swears there is almost 3 times as many as last time. The next day Toby goes to school. The night before he decided not to ask his mom if he could play baseball because she would need to buy things later. So this year looks a little worse then all the other years with the financial struggle. When he gets to school he remembers all of this. The main problem currently is not that he needs money but he needs a parent signature before he can turn in his slip to the coach. He decides just to forge the signature before he meets the other guys. Toby goes with Arthur one of his friends that plays baseball. Arthur is a child in a rich family and gets everything he wants and more. Toby decides to show Arthur his 62’ Stargell baseball card. He likes being Arthur’s friend because even though he didn’t get it he gets excited for Toby. Before practice they all meet in the locker room. Coach sees that Jake isn’t there and asks Toby where he might be. Though Toby usually knows where Jake is he doesn’t this time. When coach knows Jake isn’t there he is disappointed and shakes his head walking away because he knows what Jake is doing to him self. Practice goes well and during it one of the catchers pulls a muscle in his leg. The back-up catcher moved and doesn’t play anymore. This is Toby’s chance to shine and actually be a part of the team. Toby is a catcher and gets to try out and see how well he does. After practice he goes and tells Mr. D. that he might not becoming in as often because of baseball and will do all of his recycling on Saturdays instead.
